Gttingen is a smallish, but very charming city. It is located in the south of Lower Saxony and very central in Germany. Gttingen is a typical German university city with 30,000 students, who make up a quarter of the population. Many famous scholars have taught here, from the Brothers Grimm to Max Planck and Werner Heisenberg. The Georg-August-University can be proud of more than 40 Nobel Prize winners. The Old Town with its half-timbered houses is worth seeing and very cozy. Impressive churches, beautiful town houses from the late 19th century, venerable university buildings and the Old Botanical Garden from 1736 characterize the cityscape.

The heyday of Gttingen as a trading hotspot and Hanseatic city can be felt at every corner. Education, research and science are characteristic of Gttingen. Four institutes of the Max Planck Society, the German Aerospace Center, the University, a private University and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts contribute to Gttingen being a city "that creates knowledge".

Culture

Several theaters, many clubs, a symphony orchestra, cabaret and a lively free arts scene characterize the city's cultural landscape. Numerous festivals, such as the Hndel Festival, founded in 1920, contribute to the attractiveness of the city. Jazz, rock, church music and modern classical music make up Gttingen's musical culture. The Literary Autumn brings internationally renowned authors to the city. High German is spoken in Gttingen: perfect for learning the language!

Leisure

Parks, lakes and forests in the hilly landscape around Gttingen are inviting you to many excursions. The Harz Mountains are easily accessible by train. Gttingen is a very sporty city for active people and spectators. Basketball is very popular. The bicycle is present everywhere. In the center, there are clubs, cafs and pubs. There is always something going on at the university campus and on weekends, there are many parties.

I used to find learning German really difficult and I tried lots of different things. But on the language course at the Goethe-Institut, I suddenly started making rapid progress.
